UPPAbaby G-Link2 Stroller- What Are The Upgrades For 2019

The UPPAbaby G-link has been a hit for twin parents since it debuted in 2015. This baby stroller has a lot of cool features to go for and it ticks a lot of boxes in regard to construction quality, comfort, and safety.

Among other things that parents can’t help raving about is the fact that it can be comfortably used by newborns as well as older toddlers weighing up to 55 lbs.

Unfortunately, the G-Link has 2 major design flaws that most of its buyers have had to endure all along: size of the stroller and size of the canopies. This stroller’s open dimensions 29 (L) x 30 (W) x 42 (H) make it one of the largest and widest lightweight strollers that I came across in 2018.

Anyone who owns it will tell you that it really struggles to go through doorways. In addition, this is not one of those strollers that you push one-handed even with one rider onboard and popping it onto curbs isn’t so enjoyable too.

The canopies – which are rather on the small side – provide only a decent shade from the sun, especially when the seats are fully reclined. No baby likes to sleep with sun in their eyes, am I right? But don’t worry – UPPAbaby has just improved these sunshades and made them much bigger.

Enter the G-Link2!

It’s the end of the year! As it’s always the case with stroller manufacturers, UPPAbaby has announced the release of a redesigned version of the G-Link: the G-Link2.

This revamped stroller, which is set for launching in spring 2019, aims at solving most of the snags highlighted by G-Link users.

This means that if you are eyeing the older model, just a little patience might get you a stroller that is much easier to maneuver especially through doorways and hallways.

But is the newer version really worth the wait?

The UPPAbaby G-Link2 comes in 2 color versions; Jake black and Jordan/Charcoal Melange. Although it borrows most of its features from its elder sibling, what you’ll definitely love is that it’s a tad narrower and, therefore, less bulky.

The newer model now measures 29.5”L x 28.5”W x 42”H when open. Well, compared to its original measurements, the redesigned stroller is only around 1.5’’ narrower. This might not seem like a big difference on paper, but you’ll really appreciate it if you have narrow doorways.

There’s a really huge improvement in terms of weight too. UPPAbaby says that the G-Link2 has been crafted with a lighter frame to bring the total weight to approximately 22 pounds.

This weight coupled with the narrower design means that it should be much easier to roll your kids during the evening strolls. I believe this combination will also be a huge plus in cities with narrow store aisles and tight elevators.

Worth mentioning, the seat width was not affected by the reduction in the overall width of the stroller so the kids will still be comfortable (we’ll talk more about this in a bit).

The biggest change for G-Link2 2019 is probably the size of the canopies. On the newest model they will have 3 extendable panels instead of 1 panel. There still will be the same pop out sun visor for added protection from sun burns.

I also like that the basket has now been redesigned to make it larger and much easier to access. I don’t mean that G-Link’s basket was any worse. Actually, you might not come across any complaints about it. But it was a tad hard to access at times.

UPPAbaby says that the updated basket can now hold weights of up to 10 pounds so you can stuff in a bunch of items including your medium diaper bag and shoppings.

The G-Link2 has yet another change that not everyone might like so much: it’s now recommended for kids 3 months up. Unlike its predecessor that shipped ready for newborn babes, the G-Link2 won’t be shipping with the infant insert that holds the head up for additional support. This shouldn’t be an issue though if your kid will be 3+ months by April 2019.

The 2 seats with a 5-point harness system are very roomy and each has a weight limit of 55 pounds. This means that your kids will be able to enjoy the rides till they are around 5 years. Something else that I love here is the tall 3-panel canopy that will suit even the tallest 5 yo.

Something else that I can’t fail to mention here is that each seat has a deep recline with an independent operating system. This was one of the key selling points of the G-Link and it’s great that the G-Link2 also has it. The chief advantage here is that each of the riders can have personalized comfort independent of the other’s needs.

How easy will it be to push the G-Link2?

The new model still features the ergonomically positioned padded handlebars of the G-Link. Although they are not height-adjustable, most users should have an easy time with them. The only thing, however, is that you might not be able to push the stroller using one hand.

This stroller still features the 2-wheel per leg design. Although the 4 sets of wheels make it much easier to push compared to strollers with 6 sets of wheels, they still pose a challenge when strolling in uneven terrains.

Storage is also very easy. Similar to the G-Link, the G-Link2 folds easily by pressing an easy access button on the frame and pulling a hand-operated trigger. It also has an automatic lock for ultimate convenience.

So, going back to the question, "is the G-Link2 worth waiting for?"

I would say this will largely depend on your specific needs. If you want a stroller that you’ll safely push your newborn in, the G-Link might be your go-to guy. On the other hand, if your babe will be 3 months or older by spring next year, the G-Link2 might impress you with its narrower and lightweight design.
